One of the many small islands along the Aztec canals on the outskirts of Mexico City is known as Isla de las Munecas (Island of the Dolls). After the drowning of a young girl nearby, a man who lived alone on the island began to collect the dolls and stuffed animals that washed ashore and display them in order to appease the spirit of the girl, festooning the entire island with the toys.
